Good flash photography works

How to use a flash on your DSLR?

Flash is very important for your photography works. They will provide you a powerful light source in the low light environment. Most of people will buy the small portable flash for their DSLRs. The flash photography can bring your vision to a whole new world of creativity.

Many of you may notice there are internal flash on different camera bodies.

The onboard flash does have limited uses for you photography works. It's all about the power of light. External flash can give you much more powerful light on your subject base on the distance and environment. They can put on all the DSLRs which have the standard hot shoe.

So we will learn simple 5 steps to use your flash.

Step 01:

Check your battery and mount it on your camera's hot shoe.

Step 02:

Turn on your camera and make sure all the settings of external flash are correct. (Use Auto model)

Step 03:

Change your shooting model to P(Program) or M(Manual)

Step 04:

Think about your subject and the light situation. That will help you decide the power of your light, such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/16.

Step 05:

Do couple tests of shoot. Try to change the position of your flash head to achieve better result.

What is the Full Frame DSLR?

Nowadays, we have many various DSLRs on the market. You may heard many different words to describe DSLRs, such as DX, Full-Frame, APS-C, FX and etc. In fact, there are two major kinds of cameras which depend on their image sensors.

First, I want to introduce the Full-Frame to you. Back to the age of film, almost every cameras were using the standard size of film which is 24mm by 36mm. Now, all the major camera manufacturers developed digital cameras base on the sensor. If the sensor's size as same as the film and then we call it "Full Frame". For example, Nikon D700, Nikon D800, Nikon D600, 5d mark iii, and 5d mark ii are all Full Frame DSLRs.

Second, there are many DSLRs have crop sensors. We can call those cameras "APS DSLR". They have smaller sensors than FULL FRAME sensor. APS stands for Advanced Photo System.

APS DSLRs are much cheaper than FULL FRAME with less performance. At the same time, APS DSLR uses special lenses.

Some key words in PHOTOGRAPHY

Aperture: Lens opening controlling the amount.

Aperture Priority(AV): Semi-automatic camera setting: photographer chooses an aperture and camera chooses the appropriate shutter speed to make a good exposure.

Auto Focus: Automatic focusing system.

Bit: Short for binary digit, the basic unit of binary language.

Bit depth: Number of bits(memory) assigned to recording color or tonal information.

CCD: Charge Coupled Device which is a solid state sensor used in digital image capture, i.e., most Nikon cameras have CCD sensors.

CMOS: Another type of image sensor used in digital cameras.(Canons)

Diffuse: Dispersion of light(spread out) not focused.

F-stop: Numerical system indicating aperture diameter.(F 2.8, F 3.5, F 22)

Fast Lens: Lens where the widest aperture setting is very wide, i.e. F 1.4. It will allow you to obtain good exposures in very low light or at very high shutter speeds.

Flash light: Mobile 5800k light source, high intensity, short duration.

ISO: Stands for "International Standers Organization", a standardized number rating the sensitivity of a film to light.( ISO 100- ISO 10200)

A wonderful traveling spot in Vietnam - Nha Trang

Review of Cowboystudio 4-Channel Radio Remote Trigger

Recently, I just got this very cheap remote trigger for DSLR to wirelessly control studio lighting system. The brand name is Cowboystudio. It's a four channel radio remote trigger.

First,
You should check your DSLR camera and make sure it has the flash light sync cord port. Please see the image below.

Second,

Place the transmitter on the DSLR's hot shot and plug the sync cord into the camera's port.

Third,

Find the 3.5mm or 6.35mm sync port on your flash light or Monolight. Use the sync cable to connect the receivers with your lights.

In my test, I have totally four receivers with one transmitter. Make sure to turn on the transmitter and check the battery level. As you can see here, we have four points lights which are two front lights and two background lights.

Depend on my test, this trigger is functioning very well within 25 feet away from the front lights position. After I took the photos of the item on the table, I found that it only supported up to 1/160 shutter speed perfectly.
